Description

Ford, 3 ton, F60L (long wheelbase), Cab 12, 4x4, GS truck. The vehicle is finished in matt khaki green, Number three paint. It is fitted with a wooden, fixed side, Number 1, Australian body/tray. The Australian modified cabin includes a square hatch welded into the roof above the passengers position, folding seats and a clip to hold a BREN gun, which is fitted behind the passengers seat. The cabin fittings are all original, with the exception of the canvas seat cushions and overhead bump pad. The dashboard is mounted on the vehicle's centreline and is fitted with all switches, sign plates and instruments. There is one large speedometer gauge and four small rectangular shaped gauges used to monitor fuel levels, oil pressure, engine temperature and battery charge. The dataplate is located on the right of the engine cover (see images) and identifies the truck as serial number 14868; motor number 2G6B111F and model type as a F(Ford) -60L.

The vehicle is fitted with an original steel canopy frame and an original green canvas canopy dated 1942. A replica, spare wheel compartment and tool box assembly is fitted between the cabin and the front of the body. Fuel tanks are fitted to both sides of the vehicle. Fitted to the starboard side are the battery compartment and three, two gallon cans marked O, P & W respectively. A winch is fitted to the centre of the chassis of the vehicle and can winch between guide rollers fitted to the front and rear. There are two swivel 'D' shackles bolted to the front bumper bar. The five 11:00 x 20 tyres have a non directional bar tread pattern and there is cracking prevalent in the tyre walls.

Stenciled to the front mudguards and rear tailgate of the vehicle are a formation and a unit sign. The first one showing a yellow box containing a penguin atop a boomerang and the second showing a box in two halves of upper red and lower blue with a number 42 over stenciled in white. The original army number for this vehicle is 46074 and this is stenciled in white at the rear and onto either side of the bonnet. There is a bridging sign on the bonnet consisting of a yellow roundel containing a black number 8.

History / Summary

This vehicle was used by the Australian Army during the Second World War. It served at least part of its career with the Second Australian Infantry Division and in Western Command. It was disposed of in 1946.
