Description

Depicts a number of buildings, prisoners and a fenced area at Alten-Grabow prisoner of war camp, Germany, during the First World War. The painting was originally donated to the War Memorial in December 1947 by Mr. Robert Emil Luks. R.E.Luks served with the Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train, during the First World War, and amassed a large collection of material, donating it to the War Memorial during the 1930s and 40s. Alten-Grabow was a First World War prisoner of war camp in Germany, north of Magdeberg. It was also know as Stalag XIA (341) during the Second World War, when it housed prisoners from the USA, Britain, France, Belgium, New Zealand and Holland. Alten-Grabow is currently known as Dornitz.
