Informal group portrait of (ex) 829 Private Joseph Richards and two friends at a reunion. Richards served in the Boer War with the 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles. He is offering his friends the hard tack ration biscuit he souvenired from his service in South Africa (See AWM collection item REL/32800). These biscuits were issued to troops and known as ‘forty-niners’ because they are indented with 49 holes across the top of the biscuit.
