Burnisher : Australian Army
Description
Australian Army burnisher for steel objects. The burnisher comprises a square leather pad with a section of chain mesh attached to it via evenly spaced holes punched in the edge of the leather. On the reverse are faintly visible impressed markings, including a Broad Arrow.
History / Summary
Believed to be associated with R M Johnson of Runnymede, Tasmania. The burnisher is designed to be used on steel articles such as horse equipment. Burnishers were used by militia units during service in Australia rather than by servicemen during wartime - either Boer War or First World War.
