Description

The Kilitbahir inscription, seen from the sea. The gigantic inscription cut into the hillside above Kilitbahir features the silhouette of a Turkish soldier and part of a poem by Necmettin Halil Onan: Traveller, halt! The soil you tread Once witnessed the end of an era. The verse suggests the significance of the Gallipoli campaign for Turkey in shaping the end of the Ottoman empire and leading to the foundation of the Turkish republic.
