Storage case for dial sight Mk II (AUST) : Vickers Medium Machine Gun
Rectangular shaped, steel storage case for a Vickers machine gun dial sight, Mk II (AUST). The case is finished in khaki green No. 3 paint which is in very good condition. The words 'BOX DIAL SIGHT VICKERS MG MKII' are stencilled in white paint on the lower front panel. The hinged lid of the case is secured with a sturdy steel latch, and an adjustable 1 inch webbing carry strap is attached. The interior is fitted with a shaped plywood base, with recesses to hold the sight securely when being stored. There are two 'C' shaped spring clips screwed to the plywood. These hold a black tubular spirit level known as a 'Level, Checking M.G. Dial Sight MkI' A rectangular rubber block fitted to the inside of the lid assists in holding the sight firmly when stored. Also fitted inside of the lid are two steel spirit levels with rotating brass covers and steel locking wheels. These are 'Levels Emergency M.G. Dial Sight MkI'. The interior of the lid is reinforced and the inner edge is lined with felt strips to help keep dust out.
The Mk II dial sight replaced the heavier brass and steel Mark I dial sight, introduced into British service in 1939. In Australian service during the Pacific campaign, the Mk II dial sight was designed to be used in conjunction with Mk.VII type .303 inch ammunition. The history of this sight and case are unknown.
