Description

White cotton drill summer jumper with large square blue denim fall collar bearing three white tape stripes. Front opening has five concealed brown celluloid buttons and waist has cotton tape drawstring. Patch pocket at left breast has scooped upper edge that slants from right down to left. Sleeves have four darts, arranged in pairs, radiating from each cuff, and a white shell button at the opening. On the upper left sleeve is an embroidered blue on white rank badge for a 1st class petty officer, bearing a crown above crossed anchors with three inverted chevrons below. The inverted chevrons may be for good conduct. Jumper is unlined and has maker's label at the back neck 'ORIENT CLOTHING DAVID JONES & CO SYDNEY'.

History / Summary

Unusual pattern of white summer jumper, which were normally cut in one piece without a centre front opening, worn by the New South Wales Naval Brigade which was formed in 1863. There were four companies in Sydney and one in Newcastle. Often worn with a sennet hat.
