Josiah Barnes collection of First World War negatives and prints
Members of the 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, standing in rows four abreast waiting to embark on the troopship RMS Orontes. Identified, left to right, front row: probably 1860 Acting Sergeant (A/Sgt) Edward Herbert Jones, teacher of East Brunswick, Vic; unidentified Acting Sergeant; 1887 A/Sgt William Barlow O’Malley, clerk of Northcote, Vic; 1843 A/Sgt John William Guest, 45 year old farmer of Corryong, Vic. Third row: 1788 Private (Pte) Frederick James Arthur, 41 year old groom of Rushworth, Vic. Seventh row: 1808 Pte Richard Harry Carey, of Gardenvale, Vic. Ninth row: 1826 Pte William George Dunlop, of Euroa, Vic. Pte Jones was killed in action in France on 23 April 1917. Pte Arthur died of wounds on 9 June 1916 in France, aged 42 years. Pte Dunlop was killed in action on 7 June 1917 in Belgium aged 33 years.
