Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives

Studio portrait of 7581 Private (Pte) Harry Viggo Tennant, 6th Battalion from Collingwood, Victoria. A 20 year old plumber prior to enlisting on 9 May 1917, he embarked for overseas with the 25th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 4 August 1917 aboard HMAT Themistocles. Following further training in England, he joined the 6th Battalion in Belgium on 18 February 1918. Pte Tennant was wounded in action near Rosieres, France on 9 August 1918 and died of his wounds that same day. He is buried in the Adelaide British Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, France. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
