Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Description
Outdoors portrait of 31419 Gunner (Gnr) Reginald Kelly. An electrical engineer from Kensington, Victoria prior to enlistment, Gnr Kelly embarked with the 9th Reinforcements, 12th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) from Melbourne on RMS Orontes on 23 November 1916. Later transferring to the 16th Battery, 6th FAB he was killed in action in Belgium on 24 August 1917, aged 22, and was buried in the Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
