Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 2843 Private (Pte) Thomas Henry Gorringe. A railway official from Nambour, Queensland prior to enlistment, Pte Gorringe embarked with the 6th Reinforcements, 57th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Nestor on 2 October 1916. Following his graduation from signals school, he joined the 1st Divisional Signal Company and was gassed and evacuated to England. Following his recovery he rejoined his unit as was gassed once more. Due to the severity of the gas poisoning, he returned to Australia on 19 October 1918 and was medically discharged. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
