Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 5451 Private (Pte) Harold John Squires, 5th Battalion. A printer from Swan Hill, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Squires embarked along with his brother 5450 Pte Albert Cecil Squires with the 18th Reinforcements on HMAT Ayrshire on 3 July 1916. Whilst serving in France, he was wounded in action and, due to the severity of his wounds, returned to Australia on 21 July 1917 and was medically discharged. Pte Albert Squires returned to Australia on 11 June 1919. See also DA15527. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
