Busby : Transvaalse Staatsartillerie
Black fur busby with red wool bag. Attached to the end of the bag is a gold tassel. On the front of the busby is a brass badge featuring crossed cannons and a bursting grenade. Each side features a gold lion's head hook for the gold chain and black leather chinstrap. At the rear of the busby is a gold lions head hook with a long gold tassel attached.
Worn on the dress uniform of members of the Transvaalse Staatsartillerie (Transvaal State Artillery). Before the outbreak of the Boer War the Transvaal maintained a small professional artillery corps. Uniforms for these units were based on European styles, like this busby, which was based on those worn by the Dutch Artillery units in the late 19th century.
This busby was captured from the artillery barracks in Pretoria when the city was captured by the British on 5 June 1900.
