Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 3906 Private (Pte) Stirling John Rogerson. A potter from Box Hill, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Rogerson embarked with the 12th Reinforcements, 8th Battalion from Adelaide on HMAT Ceramic on 23 November 1915. Later transferring to the 59th Battalion he was wounded in the back and evacuated to England. Later re-joining his battalion he was wounded in the right shoulder and again evacuated to England. Following the Armistice he took the opportunity to be married and returned to Australia on 21 December 1919. During the Second World War he served in Malaya with the 2/23rd Battalion before returning to Australia to serve with the 4th Reserve Motor Transport Company and was discharged on 2 February 1942 suffering from an undisclosed illness. On 26 March 1945 he succumbed to his illness and was buried in the Box Hill General Cemetery, Victoria. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
