Description

Outdoors portrait of 4454 Private (Pte) Frederick Knight, 21st Battalion. A labourer from Kilmore, Vic prior to enlistment, Pte Knight embarked with his brothers 4455 Pte Ralph Simon Johnson Knight and 4453 Pte Albert Edward Knight with the 11th Reinforcements from Melbourne on RMS Orontes on 29 March 1916. After serving on the Western Front, he returned to Australia on 12 May 1919. Pte Albert Edward Knight died of wounds on 19 January 1917 and Pte Ralph Knight returned to Australia on 1 April 1919. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
