Description

Group portrait of 3013 Private (Pte) William Lockhart Bronner Hope, 6th Battalion (left) and two unidentified soldiers. A compositor from St Kilda, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Hope embarked with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne on RMS Osterley on 29 September 1915. Later transferring to the 1st Australian Camel Battalion, he was promoted to Corporal and reported as missing in action. A subsequent court of enquiry determined that he had been killed in action at Gaza, Syria, aged 25. Having no known grave he is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. See also DASEY1387 and DASEY1388.
