Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives

Studio portrait of 2735 Private Stanley Roy Niddrie, 58th Battalion from Hamilton, Victoria. A 19 year old drover prior to enlisting in the AIF on 3 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 6th Reinforcements of the 23rd Battalion from Melbourne on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT Ulysses. He joined the 58th Battalion in France on 23 February 1916 and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 4 March 1916, to Corporal on 6 August 1916 and to Sergeant (Sgt) on 22 March 1917. After serving six months with the 65th Battalion in mid-1917, he returned to the 58th Battalion. Sgt Niddrie was killed in action on 6 August 1918 near Villers-Bretonneux, France and is buried in the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
