Description

Copy of a portrait of Argall. It is probably one of two pairs of Argall brothers. 2441 Private (Pte) Frederick James Argall and his brother 2440 Pte Arthur William Argall embarked from Melbourne with the 4th Reinforcements, 29th Battalion aboard HMAT Anchises (A68) on 14 March 1916. During their service both brothers transferred to the 46th Battalion. Frederick was killed in action in France on 14 November 1916. Arthur William returned to Australia in 1919. (See DA13762; DA13764; DA13765; DA13766; DA13876; and DASEY2594 for portraits of these brothers.) 2456 Pte Edward Argall embarked from Melbourne with the 7th Reinforcements, 8th Battalion. Edward transferred to the 7th Battalion and returned to Australia on 10 December 1918. His brother 6949 Pte Arthur Jolly Argall embarked from Melbourne with the 23rd Reinforcements, 8th Battalion, aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 23 November 1916. He transferred to the 37th Battalion and returned to Australia in 1919. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
