Bugle : Private T B McPherson, 9 Battalion AIF
Brass bugle with a green cotton tassel and cord attached. The brass on the end of the bell and on the mouthpiece is of a different type to that on the body. The tassel has a pair of olivets with a wooden ball in each one. On the top of the bugle is stamped 'HENRY POTTER & CO 66 WEST ST CHARING (etched cross) ROAD LONDON 1912'. Immediately below this stamping is '9TH R.FCTS 9TH. BATT 8.15'. Attached to a metal loop on the side of the bugle is a metal figure of eight loop. Inside the bell and body of the bugle appears to be the dusty remnants of cleaning solution.
This bugle is associated with the service of 2859 Private Thomas Brown McPherson. McPherson enlisted on 28 August 1915. He was a blacksmith and almost 20 years old. He was a member of the 9th re-inforcements for the 9th Battalion, and he embarked for overseas service at Sydney on HMAT Ayrshire on 1 September 1915. His older brother, Angus Campbell McPherson aged twenty one, was also on board the Ayrshire. Private McPherson returned to Australia on 12 April 1919 on board the HMAT Suffolk. His brother Angus also returned to Australia on the same voyage.
