History / Summary

James Marsden Hislop was born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1891 but was living in Neutral Bay, Sydney with his mother at the time of the First World War. He was a 25 year old commercial traveller when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 1 September 1916 and was assigned the number 31110. With the rank of Gunner, but acting as a Corporal, he sailed for France with 12 Reinforcements of 5 Artillery Brigade aboard RMS Orontes on 19 December 1916. Once in France he served with 35 Siege Battery and also as Acting Quarter Master-Sergeant with 36 Heavy Artillery Group. He returned to Australia on 12 September 1919.
