German shoulder strap: Non Commissioned Officer, 229th Infantry Regiment
Description
A white piped, field grey woollen shoulder strap, edged with gold coloured Non Commissioned Officers (NCOs) lace, and bearing the brass numerals '229'.
History / Summary
This shoulder strap was taken from the tunic of a NCO, in command of a company of German storm troops,involved in the fighting at Dernancourt, on 28 March. The NCO was shot by Sergeant S.R.McDougall, just as he was about to kill an Australian officer. For his actions on the 28th, Sergeant McDougall of the 47th Battalion, was awarded the Victoria Cross.
