Description

Independence supporters armed only with rocks come under fire by pro-Indonesian militia in a Dili street. Graffitti relating to the independence movement can be seen on the wall and lamp post behind them. Militia opposed to East Timorese independence were responsible for many killings and much violence before and after the referendum of 30 August 1999. On 20 September 1999, the first elements of the Australian led International Force for East Timor (INTERFET), arrived with a United Nations mandate to restore order.
