Salts of Lemon war time pack
Penguin brand box of 'Salts of Lemon'. The cardboard box is printed on the front in maroon with the Penguin trademark followed by the words 'POISON/SALTS OF LEMON (POTASSIUM BIN-OXALATE) 1 OZ. NETT WEIGHT'. The other sides give instructions for use and the top flap is printed with 'WARTIME EMERGENCY PACK'. When this is opened the inner flap is printed with the message 'SAVE THIS CARTON FOR COLLECTION'.
This package was found in a Sydney home in 2004. The production of a smaller box with simple printing is an example of the measures introduced in the domestic market in order to conserve materials for the war effort. The message underneath the flap about saving the carton for collection refers to the drive to collect used materials for recycling.
