Description

Scarlet superfine tunic with white superfine stand collar and pointed cuffs. Upper edge of collar decorated with silver infantry pattern lace and lower edge with silver Russia braid. Twisted round silver cord shoulder straps each with one embroidered silver bullion star for the rank of lieutenant and a single small silver-plated Perth Rifle Volunteer button. Pointed white cuffs decorated with a single bar of padded silver lace, traced all round with silver Russia braid forming an Austrian knot above the point and alternate large and small figured eyes below. Eight silver-plated brass Perth Rifle Volunteers buttons made by 'GREEN & BAKER BIRMINGHAM' at the front and two at the back waist. Skirt squared in front with white wool piping down the left front and below buttons on the right. Lower edge of tunic left raw. Closed vents at back skirt below buttons piped with white wool. Tunic fully lined, except for small section of centre back skirt, with fine cream wool and cotton mixture in satin weave; fronts quilted. Concealed pocket inside left breast lining contains two visiting cards for Lieutenant Manning. Sleeves lined with a fancy striped polished cotton sateen. Collar lined with black wool twill with attached tab at neck. Neck fastens with two ferrous metal hooks and eyes.

History / Summary

Full dress tunic worn by Lieutenant C H E Manning. The 1st Battalion, Infantry Brigade was formed in September 1900 from four companies of the 1st Western Australian Infantry Volunteer Regiment. These companies were 'A' and 'B' Company (known as the Perth Infantry) formed in 1893, and 'G' and 'C' Company. Another company was formed in 1900 at Subiaco that became 'D' Company. Before 1893, the 1st Infantry Volunteer Regiment was made up of companies from the Metropolitan Rifle Volunteers.
