Description

Dark blue wool twill overalls with narrow scarlet welt down side seams. Fronts have rounded welt pockets at waist that extend above the waistband edge and are lined with cream plain weave cotton. On the back of the left pocket lining is a handwritten name and number in indelible pencil, 'F Gahan' '34A'. Black celluloid buttoned waist and fly. Waist lined with apricot and white striped cotton sateen and fly with glazed grey linen. Scooped leg hems have dark blue wool serge instep straps, lined with grey glazed linen and fastened with two small brown celluloid buttons.

History / Summary

Overalls attributed to Lieutenant C H E Manning and are of the type worn by the 1st Battalion, Infantry Brigade formed in September 1900 from four companies of the 1st Western Australian Infantry Volunteer Regiment. These companies were 'A' and 'B' Company (known as the Perth Infantry) formed in 1893, and 'G' and 'C' Company. Another company was formed in 1900 at Subiaco that became 'D' Company. Before 1893, the 1st Infantry Volunteer Regiment was made up of companies from the Metropolitan Rifle Volunteers.
