406786 Flight Lieutenant Roydon William Lugg was born in Guildford, Western Australia on 7 July 1918. He joined the Royal Australian Air Force in March 1941 and trained as a Wireless Air Gunner (WAG) at the Port Pirie Gunnery School in South Australia. He was posted to the Operational Training Unit (7 Squadron), Laverton, Victoria in January 1942 where he was a WAG in the crew of the then Commanding Officer, Wing Commander John Raeburn 'Sam' Balmer. Lugg was posted to 13 Squadron RAAF in March 1942 joining Flight Lieutenant Robert Nixon Dalkin's crew. Lugg completed a full tour with this crew from March to October 1942, flying Hudsons against the Japanese, before completing another with the then 13 Squadron Commanding Officer, 77 Wing Commander Lyle Charles Macquarie Holswich. 13 Squadron was later awarded the United States Presidential Unit Citation 'for outstanding performance of duty in action during the period 13 April, 1942 to 25 August, 1942'. Following further training at an Operational Training Unit as a Gunnery Leader he was commissioned in February 1943 and promoted to flight lieutenant in February 1945. He was demobilised in September 1945.
