Up and over in the pole vault event during the British Commonwealth Forces annual athletics meeting at Kure, Japan. Sergeant George 'Paddy' Atkinson, of Balleymcart (?), Northern Ireland, clears 9 feet 6 inches to take the event. He has served six years in the British Army, and has been in Japan for six months with the British Commonwealth Base Ordnance Depot. At fourteen years of age he enlisted in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC) Boy's Training School, Blackdown, and has advanced through the years by his ability to do the job.
