AIRCRAFT FABRIC: GERMANY
Description
SMALL RECTANGLE OF LINEN FABRIC, 8 BY 5.5 CM, BEARING ON ONE SIDE THE REMAINS OF BLACK LACQUER, AND ON THE OTHER THE WORDS 'WINGS OF HUN AEROPLANE N. FRANCE 23/6/1917 MAC'.
The piece was originally doped a dark green colour. Most of this has flaked off. The fragment appears to have been over a rib as the fabric bears evidence of having been sewn. Colour appears to be between Methune 30F7 and 30F8.
History / Summary
Crashed aircraft were a favourite subject of souvenir hunters, aircraft fabric being easily obtained and stored. German aircraft serials G.48 & G.49 are reported as both brought down by anti aircraft fire on 23 June 1916. G.48 was a Rumpler at Steenwich, and G.49 was an Albatros at Ypres.
