Nielsen speaks of his enlistment in the AIF; training at Enoggera Camp, Albury; deployment for overseas service; further training in Egypt; departure for Gallipoli via Lemnos Island; experiences at Quinns Post; falling ill with enteric fever; hospitalisation and convalescence in England; further training; departure for France; his experience of the Somme offensive and operations against Pozieres, July 1916; being severely wounded in the foot near Hill 160 [around the Windmill]; capture by the Germans and internment near Interlaken; his release in a prisoner exchange initiated by the Red Cross; having an operation on his foot in Switzerland and return to Australia at the end of the war.
