Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Reginald William Brinsmead MC, of Leopold, Vic. 2nd Lt Brinsmead enlisted on 18 August 1914 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Wiltshire on 19 October 1914 as a sergeant with A Squadron, 4th Light Horse Regiment (service no 64). He was awarded the Military Cross for his actions at Polygon Wood in September 1917, for leading his Company and capturing the final objective despite being wounded early in the action. He was killed in action on 17 December 1917, in Belgium, whilst serving with the 8th Battalion, aged 24 years. Note the colour patch on his sleeve with the Anzac "A" indicating service on the Gallipoli Peninsula.
