Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 1466 Private (Pte) William Francis Neilson, 29th Battalion. A timber hewer from Swan Reach, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Neilson embarked with the 1st Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Ascanius on 10 November 1915. Later wounded in action, he was evacuated to England. Following his recovery he rejoined his unit and was temporarily transferred to the 60th Battalion. Rejoining the 29th Battalion he was accidently wounded and, due to the nature of his wound, returned to Australia on 12 March 1918 and was medically discharged. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
