Collection relating to the Second World War service of Staff Sergeant Officer Cadet Zenon Sobczak, Polish Forces under British Command, 1940-1947. Collection includes: 'Carte D'Identite pour Officier ou S/Officier des T.P.', with stamp 'Armee Polonaise - Stacja Zborna - Beyrouth - Centre de Triage de Beyrouth', with hand-written annotations on reverse, 12 June 1940; letter, from Major Dr Michal Bujwid, certifying that Sobczak served with Polish General Hospital No. 1, 2 July 1942, English translation from Polish; certificate, by Dr Janiga, Major, Officer Commanding Field Ambulance, relating to service of Sobczak; identity booklet, 'Aliens order, 1920. - Certificate of registration' for Zenon Sobczak, Polish Resettlement Corps; 'Certificate of identity', Home Office, United Kingdom, for Janet Mitchell Sobczak nee Beatson, wife of Zenon Sobczak.

Biographical information: born 21 June 1917, Galenki, Poland; called up from Polish Army reserves, 1 September 1939; served with 2 Machine Gun Company, 2 Rifle Regiment, Polish Independent Carpathian Rifle Brigade, with Polish forces under French command in June 1940, and later under British command after 1 July 1940; served with 'Luba' Reconnaissance Squadron from 25 August 1942 to 3 September 1942; served with 10 Light Field Ambulance, 1 Armoured Division, 1 Polish Corps from 13 November 1942 to 24 February 1943; served with Field Dressing Station, 1 Armoured Division, 1 Polish Corps from 24 February 1943 to 26 November 1943; studied for Master of Pharmacy at University of Edinburgh from 26 November 1943 to 12 July 1946; served with Polish Resettlement Corps from 19 September 1946 to 10 June 1947; emigrated to Australia 15 December 1949, arrived Melbourne 24 January 1950; settled Adelaide, South Australia; changed name by Deed Poll to Mackay, 23 June 1956.
