Description
The port side (driver's side) of an M113A1 armoured personnel carrier (APC) with the call sign three one alpha (31A) and named '& TEARS II', showing the blue tri-angle of A Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, Royal Australian Armoured Corps. This APC has been damaged by a buried mine, which has removed the port side drive sprocket and first road wheel. Note the 12.7 mm thick sponson reinforcement armour, which has been retro-fitted on both sides of the vehicle, above the first three road wheels. This armour was also fitted to the inside of the vehicle (sandwiching the original plate) and helped to prevent blast and debris from entering the vehicle in the event of encountering a mine.
