German porcelain smoking pipe: Gunner Thomas Michael O'Donnell, 5th Field Artillery Brigade, AIF
Description
Porcelain bowled pipe with an integral shank and foot. The stem is missing. The front section of the bowl is decorated with a transferred religious scene depicting Saint Eustace highlighed with paint - a renaissance hunter accompanied by two dogs in a forest clearing, kneeling before a stag with a shining cross in his antlers. The Saint is in the act of praying. The inner bowl of the pipe is layered with a thick coating of burnt tobacco.
History / Summary
Related to the service of 28058 Gunner Michael Thomas O'Donnell, who served with 5th Field Artillery Brigade, AIF. He enlisted in August 1916 and was discharged in October 1919. The pipe is said to have been found by him near one of the German army's 'Big Bertha' guns.
