Studio portrait of 6276 Private William John Armstrong, 24th Battalion, of Whitfield via Wangaratta, Victoria. A teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 23 November 1916. On 31 August 1918, aged 24, during the battle for Mont St Quentin, France, he was killed in action. He is buried in the Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
