Description
Studio portrait of 2031 Lance Corporal (later Private) John Joseph Clarke, 2nd Field Ambulance Australian Army Medical Corps, of Chetwynd East, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 20 March 1916. On 6 August 1915, he was wounded in action at the Dardanelles, Turkey and died at sea of his wounds on 8 August 1915, aboard the H. S. Dunluce Castle. He was buried at sea and is remembered with honour on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
