Studio portrait of 8013 Driver (later Corporal) George Samuel Manfield, 8th Infantry Brigade Train, 18th Company Army Service Corps, (later Army Ordnance Corps) of Bentleigh, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 10 November 1915. On 8 October 1917, aged 24, he was wounded in action in the Ypres Sector, Belgium and died later that day in the 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, Belgium. He is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
