Studio portrait of 6721 Bombadier (later Sergeant (Sgt)) Ernest Ralph Smith, 4th Field Artillery Brigade of Beechworth, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Wiltshire (A18) on 18 November 1915. On 26 August 1916, he was killed in action at Sausage Gully, between Pozieres and Albert, France, aged 22. Sgt Smith is buried in the Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boiselle, France.
