Studio portrait of 3476 Company Sergeant-Major (CSM) Charles Frederick Sydes, 8th (later 59th) Battalion of Nyah, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT Nestor (A71) on 11 October 1915 as 3476 Private Sydes. On 19 July 1916, he was killed in action at Fleurbaix, France, aged 30. CSM Sydes is buried in the Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France.
