Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant (later Lieutenant (Lt)) James Roxburgh Thompson, 6th Battalion of Inglewood, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 16 July 1916. On 25 July 1916, he was wounded in action at Pozieres, France and admitted to hospital at Etaples, France where he died on 9 August 1916, aged 27. Lt. Thompson is buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery, France. His younger brother, 1183 Private Cyril Weller Thompson was killed in action on 10 August 1915 at Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey.
