Description
Studio portrait of 5230 Private (Pte) Richard Vivian Bingham Vine, 5th (later 57th) Battalion of Ouyen, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Suffolk (A23) on 1 April 1916. On 15 October 1917, he was killed in action at Anzac Ridge near Zonnebeke, Belgium during the Third Battle of Ypres, aged 20. Pte Vine has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
