Studio portrait of 1602 Sergeant (Sgt) Bertie O'Brien, 9th Battalion, of Brisbane, Qld. A labourer prior to enlisting on 23 December 1914, Private O'Brien embarked from Brisbane, Qld, aboard HMAT Seang Choon on 13 February 1915. He was awarded the Military Medal in 1916 as a company sergeant major, and was killed in action at Pozieres, France, on 23 July 1916, aged 55.
