Studio portrait of 512 Private Charles Harold McCarthy, 36th Battalion, of Grenfell, NSW. A bank clerk prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Beltana (A72) on 13 May 1916. On 11 June 1917, he was wounded in action at Messines, Belgium. He died of his wounds on 12 June 1917, at the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, France, aged 23. He is buried in the Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck, France.
