Informal portrait of N468564 Private (Pte) Alfred Howard (Howard) Toes, of Walgett, NSW, aged approximately 72 years, in his Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC) uniform. Pte Toes served with F Company of the NSW Imperial Bushmen in South Africa during the Boer War, with the Light Horse during the First World War, enlisting in 1915 at the age of 39. As the Corps Commander's standard bearer he rode with Lieutenant General (later General) H G Chauvel during the General's entry into Jerusalem in December 1917. Toes retained the standard as a souvenir which is now housed at the Australian War Memorial (see REL34737 and B01083). He served with the VDC between 1942 and 1945 when it required volunteers be able to walk 25 miles carrying a back pack which Toes completed without any problems. Alfred Toes was one of the few men to serve in the Australian Forces in three wars.
