Remains of a Lewis Light Machine Gun found at Pozieres : 6 Battalion, AIF
Description
Remains of a Lewis Light Machine Gun. Badly rusted and damaged. Missing the butt and barrel jacket. The barrel and cooling fins are bent from possibly being run over by a vehicle. The centre disc from a 47 round ammunition drum magazine is still attached to the top of the gun. There is some white paint on the heel of the pistol grip.
History / Summary
This gun was used by the 6th Battalion AIF and found near the crossing of Chalk Pit Road and First Aid Trench at Pozieres on 16 August 1917.
