Cased Japanese Type 93 50 mm trench periscope
Two piece trench periscope stored in metal carrying case. The periscope consists of a black painted wooden handle with a inset brass bolt at one end which attaches to the base of a black tubular metal body which carries an adjustable eyepiece at one end. A sliding bar attached to one side of the tube carries a 5 x 10 degree prism lens which reflects the view down the tube to the viewer. The storage case is made from painted aluminium with internal wooden and leather fittings for securing the periscope. There are fittings down each side of the case for securing a (missing) leather strap. The lid is supplied with a catch and a maker's plate with a March 1935 date of manufacture. It describes the periscope as a 'reflective observation mirror'. The periscope prism is marked 'NIKKO No 1127 JES'. The two screws securing the prism to the sliding bar are missing.
