British War Medal 1914-20 : Private J J Reid, 18 Battalion, AIF

Associated with the service of 3591 Private Johannas Jacob Reid of Gundaroo, NSW. Reid, a 19 year old labourer, enlisted on 5 October 1915 and embarked with 8 Reinforcements, 18 Battalion aboard HMAT Aeneas on 20 December. Soon after arriving in Egypt, Reid was admitted to hospital with a mild case of mumps. After his recovery he proceeded to France, arriving at Marseilles on 3 April 1916. Reid served on the Western Front with the Lewis gun section of C Company, 18 Battalion. Throughout late 1916 he was admitted to hospital several times suffering from conditions to his feet, including cellulitis, inflammation of connective tissues and trench foot. During an attack at Warlencourt on 26 February 1917 Reid was struck in the forehead by a bullet and very severely wounded. He was admitted to 1 Canadian General Hospital where he died of his wounds on 19 March. Reid is buried at the Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
