Description

Soldiers survey a damaged armoured personnel carrier (APC) which drove over a large anti-tank mine. APCs of A Company, 3rd Cavalry Regiment were transporting members of D Company, 1 Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) in the Hat Dich area during Operation Platypus when one of the APCs detonated a mine. The explosion threw the vehicle backwards, landing on its roof. The driver of the APC, 3790395 Trooper Robert James Gillard, was killed instantly and 39426 Private Robert Grist later died of injuries. Four other soldiers were wounded from the explosion.
