Description

Informal portrait of Phillip Oliver Hobson, a civilian photographer and cinematographer employed by the Navy Office, to film an RAN documentary film titled 'New Ship' which covers the commissioning of HMAS Perth (II). He is carrying a 16mm Arriflex film camera, Miller tripod, battery, and has a light meter hanging from his neck. Phillip Hobson had previously been an Australian Army Public Relations photographer, serving in the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) in Japan, the Korean War and the Malayan Emergency. Following her commissioning at Boston, Massachusetts, HMAS Perth spent eight months in American waters conducting trials and exercises. On 12 February 1966 she sailed for Australia arriving at Perth on 4 March 1966.
