Awarded to 424414 Flying Officer Rodney Simes Hoy,born in Sydney in August 1923 and educated at North Sydney High School. Hoy was a trainee civil engineer when he enlisted in the army, with the service number N303841, in December 1941while waiting for an opportunity to join the RAAF. He served as a sapper with 2 Division Royal Australian Engineers before being discharged on 11 September 1942. Hoy joined the air force the following day and after initial training at Bradfield Park in Sydney, undertook flying training at Narromine in New South Wales and at Bundaberg in Queensland, graduating as a pilot. He transferred to England and joined 100 Squadron RAF flying Lancaster bombers. Between August and December 1944 he flew 25 night sorties and 16 daytime sorties over France and Germany, including operations over Douai, Le Havre, Calais, Falaise and Cap Griz Nez in France, and over Brunswick, Volkel, Stettin, Kiel, Reimbert, Frankfurt, Neuss, Saarbrucken, Emmerich, Port Friedrich Hendrick, Duisberg, Stuttgart, Essen, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Freiberg, Dortmund and Leipzig. For this he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in March 1945. In early 1945 Hoy transferred to 157 Squadron RAF flying Mosquito bombers in defensive night fighter patrols, high level patrols and low level intruder patrols. His patrols included areas over Munster, Leipzig, Cologne, Frankfurt, Emden, Wilhelmshafen, Berlin, Pocking Airfield in Czechoslovakia and Flensberg Airfield. Hoy was discharged on 30 November 1945.
